  • This chicken risotto with bacon recipe costs less than £1 per serving.

We've kept the costs down to just 97p per portion with this chicken and bacon risotto recipe by using pudding rice instead of Arborio rice and chicken thighs instead of breast. Pudding rice is cheaper as it's a shorter grain and goes slightly sticky, which suits this dish. You could also opt for regular long-grain rice. This works just as well, although the texture is slightly different and not quite as thick.

Watch how to make Chicken and bacon risotto

    Ingredients

    • 4tbsp sunflower oil
    • 2 medium onions, peeled and cut into thin wedges
    • 4 chicken thighs, skinned and chopped
    • 6 rashers smoked streaky bacon, chopped
    • 250g (8oz) pudding rice
    • 2 chicken stock cubes
    • 200g (7oz) frozen peas
    • Salt and ground black pepper
    • 2 level tbsp freshly chopped parsley

    Method

    • Heat the oil in a deep frying pan and add the onion. Cook the onion over a medium heat for about 4-5 mins, until it softens, but not colours. Add the chicken and bacon, and continue to cook over a medium heat for a further 4-5 mins, or until the chicken is cooked.

    • Add the rice pudding to the pan, and stir it well to coat it in oil. Add the stock cube to the pan and pour in some boiling water, simmer the risotto until the water is almost absorbed and then add more water to the pan. Keep the risotto simmering gently, and add water as required until the rice is almost cooked. As a guide we used about 600ml (1 pint) boiling water in total.

    • Add the peas to the pan and cook for 3-5 mins, until they are just tender. Check that the rice is cooked and if it still has too much 'bite', leave it to cook for a little longer. It should take about 15-20 mins. Season to taste just before serving and sprinkle the parsley over it. Serve immediately. (Not suitable for freezing).

Top tips for making this chicken risotto with bacon

Make sure you reheat thoroughly before serving, as the rice needs to be piping hot. Stir the rice to make sure it is cooked and hot all the way through. You might find it easier to reheat leftover risotto in portions in the microwave. You can reheat on the hob but you'll need to keep stirring to make sure it doesn't get stuck to the bottom of the pan or burnt.

This dish is best made and eaten on the same day for the best flavour and texture but leftovers can be stored in the airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.

    Living Room Decorating Ideas

    iStock

The living room is one of the most important areas in your house for a great hosting experience. It's likely you and your guests will spend countless hours in this room, discussing and entertaining.

Decorating your living room properly will deliver deeply satisfying living for your leisure time. To get there, however, you must pay attention to all of the following areas:

    1. the colors that you select

    2. material and quality of seats and furniture

    3. wall decorations and art

    4. lighting and light fixtures

Below we show you some great ideas for decorating your living room.

The Best Colors for Your Living Room

One area that will have a disproportionate impact on the mood of your living room is the color you choose for the walls. While you can install wallpaper to change the look of certain walls, there are areas that wallpaper cannot cover. Getting the wall color right, therefore, gives you the best shot at creating a remarkable effect.

Some of the best color palettes for living rooms include:

    1. White - White walls add a touch of class. They are the perfect backdrop for decorating with upscale furniture.

    2. Turquoise - This color is great for creating an informal but refined feel. Your kids and family will love the refreshing mood this color creates.

    3. Cream - Striking a balance between formal and informal, cream-colored walls create a quiet, soothing effect.

    Furniture Choices

With your wall color selection made, you should select furniture that pairs well with the colors you've already chosen. For example, combining white couches with white walls will create resonance in your room design.

Make sure to provide ample seating to avoid crowding. Add multiple sofas, easy chairs and other seats that can accommodate a complete roomful of people, depending on the size of the room.

Furniture like TV stands and tables should generally blend in with the colors of the room and ceiling. There are some natural materials, however, that can work regardless of the colors on the walls. For example, wooden table surfaces look good whether your walls are white, blue or another color.

    Lighting Ideas

You can greatly improve the aesthetics of a living room with bright lighting and impressive light fixtures.

To start, you can consider a beautiful chandelier in the center to provide light around the whole room. This central masterpiece ensures adequate lighting throughout the living room while adding an air of elegance.

You can then add to the light sources in the living room with individual lights on tables and around the walls in areas where people will not knock them down.

    Carpeting

Consider adding carpeting to your living room to create a comfortable walking area. Carpeting lets you and your guests go barefoot if you choose. The living room almost demands this since you will want to take off your shoes and kick back on occasion. Warm plush carpets provide a good, comfortable surface for this. There are many choices when it comes to carpet size.

If your living room is very large, you can opt for wall-to-wall carpeting. On the other hand, if it's smaller, you can add just an area rug in the place where you will sit. For example, you can have a rug around the sitting and TV area where your kids will play.

The advantage of area rugs over wall to wall carpeting is, mainly, lower costs and ease of replacement. You can completely change the area rug and create a new aesthetic in a fraction of the time it would take to begin installing new wall-to-wall carpeting.

Art Ideas for Your Living Room

Many homeowners like to have some wall art in their living room. If your living room is spacious, it can accommodate a good-sized piece of art mounted alongside one wall. In some instances, you can consider multiple art pieces. Invariably, tasteful art adds to the sophistication of a living room. It adds an interesting item that sparks many conversations from impressed guests.

Selecting art is an opportunity to express your unique personality. If you are fairly conservative, you can select some classical type pieces that portray a quiet life. If you are more adventurous, you can experiment with a post-modern impressionist piece that others might consider risky. It's your space, and so feel free to decorate it to express who you are.

    Mountain Lion Living Room

    Mountain Lion Living Room

    Internet Culture

    Published Jul 15, 2018   Updated May 21, 2021, 11:09 am CDT

What would you do if a mountain lion sought refuge in your living room? If you're Facebook user Lauren Taylor, you apparently use telepathy to calm down the animal and make sure it has a comfy place to take a nap.

Earlier this month, while apparently trying to seek refuge from wildfires in Oregon, a mountain lion entered Taylor's home after drinking from her fountain outside of her back door. According to Taylor, the cat tried to leave through a closed window after somebody in the house screamed and then hid behind the sofa.

But instead of trying to shoo the animal outside—or running, hiding, and calling the cops on the potentially dangerous animal—Taylor said she had a better idea: try to communicate with it on a telepathic level. Wrote Taylor on her Facebook post:

Cats are extremely psychic and perceptive of energy and this lion could have been dangerous in an energy field of fear or anger. In fact, before I consciously elevated the energy field and entrained her to a theta state, a housemate had shouted and slammed a door upon seeing her and the lion was frightened, agitated, and determined to exit through a closed window. Once the energy shifted, she calmed down.

When she was so quiet and it was obvious from the position of her feet on the wall that she was laying down, I went outside to see through the window what she was doing. She was sleeping! When I made noise, she woke up and looked startled so I consciously raised my frequency, gazed lovingly into her eyes, and communicated using feline-speak eye blinking to calm her. It was amazing to realize that this worked. I gazed lovingly then blinked hard and then she did it back! Then, she went back to sleep.

This video taken by Taylor seems to show a sleepy mountain lion enjoying some rest time.

When the animal woke up, Taylor wrote that "I again connected in a loving way," and communicated to the animal through blinking. The animal, then, returned to her slumber. Taylor wrote that the lion slept behind the sofa for more than six hours. Here's how Taylor said she got the mountain lion to exit the house.

Wrote Taylor: "It was just a couple hours to dawn and we needed to prompt her to leave without alarming her so much that she panicked. I sent telepathic pictures of the routes out of the house via open doors and the route out the backyard, across the creek, through an open field, and back up into the hills. We got guidance that the way to rouse her and get her to leave her safe spot behind the sofa without panicking was through drumming. We called in native ancestors' support and started drumming. She roused and knew just what to do…. walking out through the open doors, through the yard, across the creek, and through the empty field behind us exactly as we had shown her."

Taylor wrote she's confident the mountain lion won't be back and "it was a perfect ending to a blessed encounter that could have been dangerous if approached from a lower frequency."

Read Taylor's entire post here (and make sure not to invite any mountain lions into your home if you can help it).

This is wild. There's a mountain lion in our living room. Loving her to peace so she'll go out safely.Update: (Spoiler…

    Living In A Shop

    Living In A Shop

Opinion: Considering buying a place above a shop? Don't do it unless you've thought about these factors first

Whether high street or side street, look up above any shop-lined street in the capital and you are bound to see apartments.

Accessed by narrow doors tucked between the various operators, these spaces are proving an increasingly tempting living proposition. More and more, we are seeing developers turning the ground floor of their new schemes into retail spaces, so it's important to consider a number of factors if you're thinking of living above them.

The idea of living above a mini supermarket might sound convenient, but remember that to stock those shelves and cupboards, the shop has to take deliveries – often in the early mornings. Living overlooking a loading bay could soon get tiresome if you have goods being wheeled in at 4am – so consider the layout of the apartment.

Ideally, you want the bedrooms at the back and good soundproof windows. The line between late nights and early mornings might also be blurred if you purchase above a commercial space classified as 'A4 – drinking establishment', which can make a mortgage harder to come by, too. Apartments above restaurants or takeaways may also be blighted with wandering smells – so be sure to visit the property at different times to see if you can handle it before buying.

Convenience and a chance to live in buzzy areas with everything on your doorstep rank highly among the reasons to live above commercial premises. For those who love the buzz of London, having to deal with noise is quickly cancelled out by the accessibility of street life. Good soundproofing goes a long way and you can pop downstairs to grab a late snack or pint of milk – think of it as your own extended larder.

You are also likely to get more space for your money than an equivalent property. In a city like London where space is at a premium, this can be enough on its own to convince people that living above a bar might grant access to a prime area that you could otherwise not afford.

Remember, though, that some classifications are better than others – 'A1' for example, which covers most retail shops, means businesses are confined to normal working hours, meaning your slumber isn't disturbed (bar some early deliveries) and the apartment will hold more value.

We recently sold some apartments above a commercial space which is destined to be a decorative rug store, which didn't deter any buyers but reassured them, in fact. The right retailer might even add value – surely, we've all heard of the 'Waitrose effect' on property prices.

Read more: Why don't more people buy property at auction?

Finally, remember that there are no certainties. You might think you're about to live above your favourite coffee shop or designer outlet, but it may not always be the case.

Check the commercial lease first to see if there are any restrictions on usage and how long the lease with the current occupier is.

Either way, be prepared for the possibility it could change and, if it does, whether you'll still be happy to live there, even if it's a Wetherspoons.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an age-related form of arthritis. OA is what's known as a degenerative joint disease, and it tends to occur most commonly in the hips, back, hands and feet. In the United States, over 32.5 million adults are living with OA, which has no known cure. However, certain activities can reduce your risk of developing OA, and there are steps you can take to relieve the associated discomfort once you've been diagnosed with this health condition.

    What Is Osteoarthritis?

OA is a painful joint disease that occurs when the cartilage within a joint starts to break down. Cartilage normally serves as a shock-absorbing cushion between bones, and its breakdown results in bones rubbing directly against one another during movement. This friction causes the bone to thicken, which can cause spurs (bony growths) to develop between joints.

Stiffness, pain and loss of movement may occur as the joint lining becomes inflamed after long-term cartilage breakdown and spur growth. Over time, the abrasions between bones that occur when they rub together may result in permanent joint damage.

    Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Symptoms of OA may vary from person to person. However, most people living with this condition tend to experience at least one of the following:

    • Joint soreness
    • Joint pain
    • Joint stiffness following periods of inactivity
    • Morning stiffness that dissipates quickly
    • Decreased range of motion
    • Changes in posture, walking and bodily coordination
    • Pain in weight-bearing areas of the body, such as the knees, hips, spine and extremities

    What Causes Osteoarthritis?

As a person ages, it's normal for their cartilage to lose its elasticity. However, intensive stress such as vigorous exercise can make the cartilage break down faster and make a person more likely to develop OA.

There are two types of OA: primary and secondary. Primary OA is known as the more common "wear-and-tear" OA and is usually associated with aging. Secondary OA may happen from a variety of modifiable risk factors, including prior injuries, weight and genetics.

While the specific cause of OA is still unknown, there are several factors that can increase your risk of developing this condition:

    • Weight: Individuals with obesity are at an increased risk of developing OA, as their joints may experience stress due to increased weight-bearing.
    • Age: OA is known as the "wear-and-tear" form of arthritis and is associated with increasing age.
    • Anatomical sex at birth: OA affects people assigned female at birth more than those assigned male at birth, particularly after the age of 50.
    • Genetic predisposition: OA often runs in families. In addition, an individual with arthritis in one area of their body is at an increased risk of developing OA in another area, such as their knees or hands.
    • Past injury or joint overuse: Prior sports or occupational injuries (such as physical labor, repetitive motion or frequent heavy lifting) can contribute to the development of secondary OA.
    • Having other illnesses and deficiencies: People with other forms of arthritis have a greater chance of developing the condition. In addition, deficiencies in certain hormones and vitamins C, D and E may also play a role in the development of OA.

    Diagnosis & Testing for Osteoarthritis

To diagnose OA, your doctor will first take a thorough medical and social history in order to build a complete picture of your condition. Included in this medical history will be a review of your past and present symptoms.

Next, your physician will perform a physical exam to check your joints for swelling, abnormal growths and changes in range of motion. Following the physical exam, you will likely undergo imaging, such as an X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Depending on the results of your imaging, your physician can recommend a treatment protocol and activity adjustments.

    Treating Osteoarthritis

There are no known cures for OA, but there are steps you can take to prevent or alleviate the symptoms you experience:

    • Weight control: For individuals with obesity, weight control may be the best self-management technique to alleviate OA symptoms. Losing weight will help alleviate additional stress on the joints.
    • Physical activity: Moderate exercise can strengthen the surrounding musculature of affected joint muscles and increase flexibility, thus reducing stiffness. However, it's important to consult a physician for a specific exercise plan because overly vigorous exercise may worsen your symptoms.
    • Medications: Your physician may prescribe medication to help reduce joint inflammation and pain, ranging from topical creams to injections within the joint.
    • Physical therapy: Physical therapy can target and strengthen certain muscles to increase flexibility, in turn helping joint mobility. Occupational therapy can also teach you how to manage your job responsibilities without further stressing or damaging your joints. These therapies may employ braces or splints to help you lead a more comfortable life with OA.
    • Surgery: Surgery and joint replacement may be reasonable treatment options for more advanced cases of OA. During surgery, surgeons can remove or repair damaged tissues, cartilage and bone spurs. You should consult your physician for the most ideal treatment option.
    • Diet: Antioxidant intake and vitamins C, D and E are helpful in counteracting inflammation. Eating a balanced and healthy diet can also help improve your body's natural anti-inflammatory abilities.
