Living In Whitehaven
Living/working in Whitehaven?
I've just been offered a 12 month contract for a job in Whitehaven and will most likely be taking it and moving there (probably in late july/early august).
Having trying to research into living there I couldn't really find any private landlords and would really like to rent a 1 bedroom flat or so, would anyone here know, by any off chance any private landlords who I might be able to get in touch with?
And of course, who's up for climbing/bouldering at St.Bees head or when it snows, in the fells?
In reply to hfac:
My little brother may be looking to rent his one bed flat in the centre of Whitehaven. I'll ask him and let you know.

that would be great, thank you very much.
Go and have a good look around.
Whitehaven is not 'on the up' at the moment.
Other's might be even less charitable.

Not many places are! It is a bit isolated out there on the West coast, and the night life can be "interesting", but on the plus side you're sandwiched between mountains and sea.
In reply to danm: I have considered that, at the end of the day job is a job and I do need the financial income, I might be very lucky and get offered a job in Buckinghamshire, but I'd probably rather be sandwiched between mountain and sea, soon as I get a driving license then I'll just go climbing or outdoors whenever. Never been a party fan anyway so nightlife is relatively unimportant.
In reply to hfac: a lot of people who work in whitehaven / at selafield live in and around cockermouth, although without a car this would be very difficult. if cockermouth were practical for you i know a private landlord who has a one bedroom house that will be avaiable in july. let me know via here and i ll email you a link.
In reply to mike123: I have considered that, but as you have pointed out without a car it's fairly impossible, guess I'll have to settle with whatever I can find in Whitehaven! Worse comes to worst the agent I found doesn't sound too bad!
In reply to hfac: l
There's usually a few rentals advertised at Sellafield, (I mean the adverts are posted at Sellafield, the flats aren't next to a fuel pond or anything..). I'll have a look on monday. Any particular area of Whitehaven or would an outlying village on a bus route do?
In reply to Ridge: Haha, wasn't thinking it'd be next to a fuel pond though if that was the case on the plus side I might be warm in the winter :P
I can't drive yet so it'll really have to be in the centre of Whitehaven, or around 10-15minutes walking distance so I can easily get my shopping done as well as cycle to work (hospital!)
Thank you very much for the help indeed, I have also rang the agency up and they sounded fairly reasonable (better than ones I've encountered in the past)
In reply to hfac:
I spent a year there last year, it was great. Yes, it is run down and deprived, but it does have some good bits, including Anna's cafe on the seafront; great pancakes!!!
There are trains and buses between St Bees and Whitehaven; St Bees is lovely and not v far at all; wouldn't be a bad bike ride at all.
Otherwise, there are nice flats on the sea front, and there are some alright areas people are friendly!
In reply to hfac: Have you tried spareroom.co.uk..... Maybe best to go up and have a look around, its not a bad town, there are worse in Cumbria. Like you say, a job is a job, good luck in finding something. Not sure what the local paper is but maybe thats worth a try too.
Nikki: I'm sure it can't be as bad as Telford, at least St Bees is next door that instantly makes things better (by a big margin).
Heather & Dan: I have indeed tried both, I found my current place using sparerooms but not much luck in Whitehaven, and I have tried the newspaper website that just brings you to zoopla. Hence thought I'd try UKC!
In reply to hfac:
Ah, no worries, good luck anyway, sure you'll get fit cycling up the hill to the hospital anyway
In reply to hfac:
I used to work up there. It's not a bad place as such, but certainly won't win any beauty awards. Most of the people up there are friendly, although some will still regard you with suspicion if you're not Cumbrian. St Bees is easy enough to cycle to, and Drigg beach is worthwhile on a sunny day. Quite a few people live in surrounding villages, but without a car this might be a bit too much, depending on how fit you are.
On the plus side, you get to climb, mountain bike, walking in the hills etc anytime. I'd do it again if I could.
In reply to hfac:
The bus between Cockermouth & Whitehaven only takes 32 minutes, but I think are hourly. Check Stagecoach.
In reply to Jim Lancs: The place is a dive mate! Think long and hard about moving there... I wouldnt if you paid me
In reply to hfac:
You have mail.

Says someone whose profile says he lives in Manc..
In reply to Ridge: Yeah cheers for that Pov
In reply to Ridge: Got the mail, very helpful indeed thanks a lot!
I've had a look, it can't be as bad as Telford that's all I'll say!

Well, at least Whitehaven has character
I think some people are being rather unfair. Whitehaven has far more going for it than some of the neighbouring towns!
No more helpful advice than that, though learning to drive is certainly going to be a useful skill in Cumbria.
In reply to Carolyn: Every place has its own character, afterall it's going to be something new and different!
Next thing I need will probably be a climbing partner (or more than one) up that way until I get my own car! (and still I'll need a partner :P)

"Whitehaven - Not as bad Frizington"
I'll suggest that to the tourist board
On a serious note, I agree. There's nothing intrinsically bad about Whitehaven compared with anywhere else. It does seem to be a recurrent theme that any mention of West Cumbria provokes horror stories on UKC. I was told similar tales of inbred towns seething with violence before I moved to West Cumbria. I really like it up here, the nastiest, most crime-ridden area in Whitehaven is nirvana when compared to parts of Leeds, Bratfud or Manchester.

+1. It's not a place noted for public transport.
In reply to hfac:
You'll be fine in Whitehaven. Steer clear of Mirehouse, Woodhouse and Greenbank. A car would be useful though, it would drive me potty to be staring at a sun soaked Scafell a short drive/difficult bus journey away.

I received an job application form some years ago from someone in West Cumbria. The only legible part of his address was MIRUS.
Took me 5 minutes to figure out where he was from.
As I needed someone with basic literacy skills needless to say he did not get the job!
In reply to Lord of Starkness:
PS some of our best scaffolders were from Mirehouse -- though they did come with a 'certain reputation'. I could safely drink in the roughest pubs in West Cumbria with no hassle whatsoever!
In reply to Lord of Starkness:

LOL, that's great! (If a little depressing on another level, as it's much what my 6 year old would achieve)
In reply to hfac:
My dad lives in St. Bees, so I would suggest that in addition to the posters above.
It's a short journey from Whitehaven by car or bike. Train times are not ideal though for commuting into Whitehaven. It's also very handy for the sandstone climbing and bouldering nearby. You can simply walk down onto the beach and around the headland and potter around on the many boulder problems. (You would have to drive to Sandwith for North Head, though.)
As for Whitehaven itself, I find it a fairly pleasant town - friendly people and basic amenities. However, you do have to chose your area carefully. Mirehouse and Kells, for example, are pretty deprived.
Also, the nearest climbing wall is Cockermouth.
